UA Water Sustainability Program News - October 30, 2009

GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FY2010

WSP has funding available for requests from UA faculty and staff on an ongoing basis: i) Cost-share dollars for match on proposals responding to major funding calls (>$100K) that offer at least a 4:1 return on the WSP investment;  ii)  Seed grants for research support, including instrumentation acquisition, infrastructure improvement, operations and salary support, to generate data and prepare proposals targeted to specific, major funding calls that offer a return of at least 4:1; iii) Funds to support start-up packages for new faculty recruits. Details are on the WSP website www.wsp.arizona.edu under Research or contact Jackie Moxley jmoxley@cals.arizona.edu. 

TRIBUTES

1. $250K Collaborative Grant - Karl Flessa, Geosciences, has been awarded funding for a 12 month study of the Cienega de Santa Clara by Central Arizona Project (CAP), Southern Nevada Water Authority and Metropolitan Water District, related to the operation of the Yuma Desalting Plant. Preliminary monitoring was funded through WSP and CAP grant funding. Contact: kflessa@email.arizona.edu

2. $343K NSF Grant - Spectroscopy of Electrochemical Catalytic Reactions in Aqueous Systems

3. $139K NSF Grant  - Collaborative Research:  Biotic alteration of soil hydrologic properties and feedback with vegetation dynamics in water limited ecosystems. Peter Troch (PI), HWR and Kathleen Lohse (Co-PI), SNRE.   Lohse and Troch have related ongoing WSP funded projects. Contact: patroch@hwr.arizona.edu

EVENT SPONSORSHIP

AzIP - WSP was a co-sponsor of theArizona-Israeli-Palestinian Water Management and Policy Workshop: Economic, Environmental, and Community Implications of Expanding Reuse and Desalination for Future Water Supplies, hosted by  WRRC. Held in early September, the workshop was an example of science diplomacy, on how arid and semi-arid regions around the world can work together to understand and resolve water management challenges. http://www.cals.arizona.edu/azwater/AzIP_WebSummary.pdf

SAHRA Annual Meeting 2009 - WSP, B2 and the Institute of the Environment were co-sponsors of the SAHRA meeting on Climate, Water and Land Cover Change in a Non-Stationary World . Sharon Megdal, WSP director, facilitated a panel discussion on how water managers are coping with uncertainty.   WSP contributed funding and judges for the student poster competition awards: 1st Place, Erika Gallo, HWR, WSP Student Fellow; 2nd Place Daniel Bunting, SNRE; and 3rd Place, Daniel Griffin, Geography & Development. December 17, 2009 - Grand Opening of the Water Village, UA Water & Environmental Technology (WET) Center. The Water Village is a state-of-the-art testing facility for research on detection, fate and transport of biological and chemical contaminants. Contact Ian Pepper: ipepper@cals.arizona.edu

Watershed Visualization: Verde River  - SAHRA has released four, 3-D visualization modules of the Verde watershed developed as an educational tool for grade 8-12 classrooms, to educate students about basic hydrologic processes and important watershed concepts, funded through NSF. Check them out at: http://www.sahra.arizona.edu/education2/wsviz/

Wizards of Water - UA engineers and facilities at SRC/SEMATECH ERC and the Water Village are featured in segments, Mopping up the Purest Water, and Tucson Spins Sewage into Gold, co-produced by the NSF Engineering Directorate and IEEE. The segments will be broadcast nationally on radio and are on-line at: http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/static/special-reports/
